A memoir of a Veteran discharged from the Navy for being gay

I created this blog for my partner, Phillip Zimmerman, and his story of being discharged from the Navy for being gay. His memoir has a projected Spring 2011 release date. Please feel free to post your story as a GLBT person who was discharged from the Armed Services.

  1. I'm truly looking forward to the healing that this book will bring to all those hurt by similar circumstances, as well as bringing to light a terrible injustice done to thousands of veterans whose only crime was simply being who God created them to be.

I fully support Phillip Zimmerman in this endeavor and wish him all the best!

  2. I too support Phillip 100% in this project. Phillip is a light in the darkness for those who are currently suffering through injustices done by our government and even in the secular world. This book will be a comfort and hope for those suffering. I know it will be a success!

  3. Today is difficult for Phillip as he writes, word for word, the discharge comments that were given to him almost 25 years ago. The pain he is feeling right now is as if that day was today. THIS is why his story needs to be told and is HOPEFUL that other GLBT persons will find comfort in knowing they are NOT alone.

  12. Chapter VI: Paladin - Gateway to the Persian Gulf
    Excerpt:
After two months time, The USS Spruance (DD-962) relieved the USS Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG-7), and we were transferred over to her so that we could continue our monitoring of hostile activity. Unlike the Oliver Hazard Perry, this ship was “all business”, with early morning mil...itary marches loudly played to wake up the crew and start the day’s business.

  13. Chapter XII: Dark, Lonely Nights and the Rising Son
    Excerpt:

My belief is that we don’t have a person to waste. I am working with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the military services, the Congress, and others concerned to design a policy which will ensure equality and fairness, while preserving the unity and preparedness of our military....
I appreciate your views and support.
    Sincerely,
    Bill Clinton

  14. It's interesting to watch someone from my past on a television program today stating that he "placed himself in "harm's way and served and defended the Constitution of the United States... and deserves the same rights as everyone else." Ironic, isn't it?

  15. Chapter VIII: A Christmas to Remember
    Excerpt:
At one point, I noticed an obviously furious Mutawa’een stop a car. To my surprise, a young American or European woman was driving the car and she was not wearing the traditional veil. The old men banged their canes on her car and ordered her out of the vehicle.

  18. I wonder... When did discharges from the military 25 (or more) years ago become less egregious than those during the DADT period? Some of our younger veterans and allies need to understand that the discharge of LGBTQ people is not unique to their time. It has been an insidious practice of the uniformed services for far too long, with the same horrific and long-lasting effects on lives. Justice can never truly exist while many who served in silence are forgotten.

  21. Yesterday, a sailor shared his seperation evaluation with those who might want to see how good sailors are essentially thrown away by the military. Even though this sailor was good at his job, and respected for his contributions, he was not recommended for retention...simply because of his sexual orientation. Like so many others, he felt the sting of government sanctioned discrimination. When will it end?
